Tortoise Enclosure Heating Guide for UK Keepers
A tortoise that cannot warm itself properly will not digest food well, stay active or make proper use of UVB lighting. In a UK home, reliable indoor heating is therefore not an optional extra. This tortoise enclosure heating guide explains how to create a safe temperature gradient for popular garden species, including Horsfield, Hermann’s and Marginated tortoises.
The aim is not to heat every inch of the enclosure to one temperature. A tortoise needs a warm basking area, a comfortable middle area and a cooler retreat. Given the choice, it can then move between these zones and regulate its own body temperature, much as it would outdoors.
Start with the right temperature gradient
For most Mediterranean-type pet tortoises, aim for a basking area of around 32-35°C. This should be measured at shell height, directly beneath the heat lamp, rather than high up on a wall or at the fitting itself. The general daytime temperature at the warmer end of the enclosure is often around 24-28°C, with a cooler end closer to 20-22°C.
These figures are useful working targets, not a reason to ignore your individual animal. A young tortoise, one settling into a new home or an animal recovering from illness may need closer attention to its warmth. Species also differ. Horsfields naturally experience cooler, drier conditions than some Hermann’s, while Marginated tortoises generally appreciate a good, warm basking zone. If in doubt, ask for species-specific advice before changing a set-up.
The cooler end matters just as much as the basking spot. Without it, a tortoise cannot get away from the heat. Persistent overheating can cause dehydration, stress and poor appetite. A suitable hide placed at the cooler end gives the tortoise a secure place to rest.
The best heat source is usually overhead
An overhead basking lamp is normally the most practical way to heat an indoor tortoise enclosure. It provides warmth from above and encourages natural daytime behaviour: the tortoise comes out, basks, feeds and then moves away when it has warmed up.
A standard incandescent-style reptile basking bulb or a suitable halogen flood lamp can work well when correctly positioned and controlled. Flood bulbs spread heat over a broader area than narrow spot bulbs, which is often kinder and easier to manage in a tortoise table or open-fronted enclosure. The correct wattage depends on the enclosure size, room temperature, lamp height and ventilation. A bulb with a higher wattage is not automatically better.
Fit every heat lamp securely in a heat-resistant ceramic holder and keep cables completely out of reach. A lamp guard is strongly recommended, particularly in enclosed vivariums or where a tortoise could stretch up beneath the fitting. Tortoises are surprisingly determined climbers, and contact burns are painful and avoidable.
Heat mats are not generally suitable as the main heat source for tortoises. They heat from below, do not create a natural basking area and can become a burn risk if used poorly. A tortoise’s shell is designed to absorb warmth from sunlight above, so overhead heat is the sensible starting point.
Heat and UVB are separate jobs
A heat lamp does not necessarily provide the UVB a tortoise requires. UVB lighting supports vitamin D3 production and calcium use, both essential for healthy bone and shell development. In most indoor tortoise enclosures, a quality linear T5 UVB tube and an overhead basking lamp are used together.
Positioning is critical. The tortoise must be able to sit at the correct distance beneath the UVB tube, according to the manufacturer’s guidance, without getting too close to the heat bulb. Glass and plastic can block useful UVB, so lighting must be installed inside the usable enclosure area where appropriate and safely protected.
UVB output reduces over time even if a tube still looks bright. Keep a note of when it was fitted and replace it on the manufacturer’s recommended schedule. Never rely on visible light alone as proof that a UVB lamp is still doing its job.
Use a thermostat, not guesswork
Every heat source should be controlled by a suitable thermostat. A thermostat prevents dangerous temperature swings and gives you far more control when room temperatures change between winter and summer.
For a light-producing basking bulb, a dimming thermostat is often the best choice because it gently adjusts the bulb’s output. This avoids the repeated on-and-off cycling that can shorten bulb life and create an unnatural flashing effect. Ceramic heat emitters, where used, need a thermostat that is suitable for that type of heater.
Place the thermostat probe at shell height in the basking area, securely fixed where the tortoise cannot move, bury or chew it. Do not place it directly against the bulb, on the substrate or at the cool end, as it will give a misleading reading. Set the thermostat according to the temperature where your tortoise actually sits.
A separate digital thermometer at each end of the enclosure is a wise investment. An infrared temperature gun is also useful for checking the surface temperature of the basking slate, substrate and hide. Check the equipment daily at first, then regularly once the enclosure is stable. A dial thermometer stuck to a wall is better than nothing, but it is not accurate enough to be your only check.
Night-time heating depends on the tortoise and the room
Healthy adult Mediterranean tortoises do not usually need a bright heat lamp left on overnight. They need a proper day and night rhythm. Set daytime heat and UVB lighting on a timer for roughly 10-12 hours in winter and up to 12-14 hours during the brighter months, adjusting sensibly for your routine and the animal’s needs.
If the overnight room temperature remains above around 15°C and the tortoise is healthy, a natural night-time drop is often fine. Very young tortoises, unwell animals and enclosures in particularly cold homes may need additional night-time warmth. In that case, a ceramic heat emitter can provide heat without light, but it must be fitted safely, guarded and controlled by a thermostat.
Do not use coloured red or blue night bulbs. Tortoises need darkness to rest properly, and coloured lighting can disturb that cycle. If you are regularly struggling to keep an enclosure warm overnight, assess the room, enclosure design and insulation rather than simply fitting a more powerful bulb.
Enclosure size, substrate and room temperature all affect heating
A small enclosure can become too hot very quickly. A large open tortoise table may need a different lamp height or wattage to achieve the same basking temperature. Deep, damp substrate can feel colder than a dry shallow layer, while draughts from doors, windows and conservatories can make temperatures unpredictable.
Avoid placing an enclosure beside a radiator, fireplace, external door or sunny window. Direct sun through glass can turn an enclosure into an oven, while a radiator may create a hot area that is not controlled by the thermostat. A stable room with good ventilation is easier to manage.
The heat lamp should cover one end only. Arrange food, water and a hide so that the tortoise can choose different temperatures throughout the day. Water should be available daily, but keep it away from directly beneath the hottest lamp so it does not become unpleasantly warm or evaporate too quickly.
Watch the tortoise as well as the thermometer
Equipment tells you what the enclosure is doing. Your tortoise tells you whether the conditions are working. A healthy animal will usually emerge to bask, become active after warming up, eat appropriately and use both warm and cooler parts of its home.
A tortoise that remains inactive, refuses food, spends all day directly under the lamp or constantly tries to escape may be too cold, too hot or otherwise unsettled. Poor appetite can also be linked to diet, illness, parasites or an unsuitable hibernation plan, so do not assume heating is the only answer. A reptile-aware veterinary surgeon should assess a tortoise that appears unwell.
Heating during hibernation
Do not attempt to keep a tortoise in a normal heated enclosure and call it hibernation. Hibernation is only suitable for certain species and only for healthy animals that have been properly assessed, prepared and weighed. Sick, underweight, very young or newly acquired tortoises should not simply be allowed to cool down for winter.
Horsfield and Hermann’s tortoises are commonly associated with hibernation, but the decision is individual and should be made with experienced guidance. If you are not fully confident that hibernation is appropriate, keeping the tortoise awake with correct heat and UVB is the safer route.
