Tropical tortoises require a higher level of care than, the normal popular garden species such as Horsfield’s and Hermann’s.
We do not recommend people buy a tropical species as a first tortoises. Tropical species include, Leopards, Redfoots, and Sulcata tortoises.
All tropical tortoises kept in the northern hemisphere, will require background heating at night time. Therefore there is added cost of electricity. Obvious keeping a large number of these species, will substantially increase daily financial costs.
Sulcatas can grow very big. At sub adult size you would need purpose built fox proof warm outdoor enclosure, with adequate outside space for basking in the daytime.
Please call us if you would like further advice on keeping tropical species of tortoises (Chelonia).
